Affirmations are a form of self-help. They are positive statements, usually only a few words, that we can repeat to ourselves throughout the day. We don’t even have to believe the affirmation! We don’t need an affirmation if we already believe the statement to be true. Affirmations allow us to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. With repeated use, they can have a great influence on our ability to see ourselves in a positive light. They can help us to ‘be the change we want to see’ in ourselves.
Repetition
Repetition is very important. It helps us to get those words right into our minds. There are different ways to do this. I like to write an affirmation down on a small piece of card and carry it in my pocket or my purse. I put another in my kitchen window, right by the sink where I can see it every time I use the tap. I have one tucked behind a corner of my mirror, so I see it when I brush my hair or do my make-up. I have a friend who makes a voice message of her affirmations so she can listen to it on her phone at any time. You may think of other ways to make affirmations a part of your daily routine – make them work for you in your own way.
How Many is Enough?
When choosing your affirmations, you should ideally have 3-5 at any one time. You don’t want to overload or confuse things. You will need to repeat your chosen affirmation/s 3-5 times a day.
In the same way, keep them short – too many words to remember or read at a glance will be counter-productive. Below are twenty examples of affirmations you might choose to work with.
But Which?
The affirmations you choose should be meaningful to you, as something you need to work on within yourself. For each of the examples below, ask yourself if the statement is already true for you. For instance, are you free from pain? If so, number 2 is not for you. Do you feel beautiful? If not, then number 6 might be good for you, especially if you feel quite the opposite, and so on.
I have an abundance of energy.
I am free of pain.
Today is my day.
Today I will change my life.
I am strong.
I am beautiful.
I am loved.
Unlimited energy will find me today.
Today I am a magnet for ideas.
I will be a giver of love today.
The sunrise fills me with confidence.
I can overcome challenges that come my way.
Today, I will learn and grow.
I will be a better person today.
I will help someone today.
I love who I see in the mirror.
Success will find me today.
I am grateful for another day to shine.
Today is full of possibilities.
I will be fearless today.
In Conclusion…
Affirmations are short phrases which help us to affirm certain ideas and thoughts. Research has proven this can be helpful to your self-esteem, and your mental well-being, and even to help you become more open to changes in behaviours.
They are easy to use and cost nothing to do. You simply keep working with your chosen affirmations until they become your reality, or until you find yourself better aligned with their content and ready to move to another.
Affirmations can be a useful part of your daily life.
